If you’ve got serious trailering to do — for work or for fun — the three available engines under the hood of the 2020 Colorado are up to the task. If you’re looking for the most powerful towing option, the Duramax® turbo-diesel is the way to go, but the 3.6L V6 with available trailering package comes in close behind. Also, pay attention to the GCWR to see just how much each engine can tow, in addition to the weight of the loaded vehicle. You can find key specs about the 2020 Chevy Colorado towing capacity in this engine performance chart.

As you may have noticed, there can be plenty of long terms to remember about towing and truck performance. That’s why we broke down a few of the important ones for you here.
Gross combined weight rating. This is the combined weight of the truck and trailer. The manufacturer of your vehicle knows how much the systems on your vehicle can safely handle while you’re towing, so to keep your engine, transmission, tires, brakes, and suspension in good shape, don’t go past this number.
Gross vehicle weight rating. This is the weight of your truck with everything in it — you, fuel, cargo — except the trailer — that you don’t want to be heavier than. You can load your vehicle until it reaches this weight, but for the good of your brakes, suspension, transmission, and tires, don’t go beyond it.
If you’re looking for beefy payload capability — the weight your truck bed can handle — the 2020 Colorado has options for you. We’ve collected the payloads for each 2020 Colorado engine option in this table:
Engine |
Max Payload (lbs.) |
2.5L I4 |
1,444 |
3.6L V6 |
1,551 |
Duramax® 2.8L turbo-diesel I4 |
