The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse and the 2016 Ford Explorer both provide a winning combination of crossover utility and family friendly versatility. Both will probably get the job done if you’re considering a new vehicle to portage your family around town and country. That doesn’t mean they’re equals. Find out how they differ below.

Powertrains and Efficiency

While you might think that the two vehicles with similar powertrains will offer similar efficiency and capability, you would be wrong in this case. Under the hood of the Ford Explorer, you’ll find a 3.5L V6 engine that makes 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. The Traverse uses a 3.6L V6 engine to make 288 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. In this case, the added torque helps the Traverse tow more than the Explorer—it’s rated at 5,200 pounds, while the base is capable of pulling 5,000 pounds.

Both vehicles are equally efficient with an EPA rating of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway with front wheel drive and standard engine and automatic transmission. You’ll fill up the tank less often with the Traverse, however, because it has a 22 gallon fuel tank, compared to the 18.6 gallon tank in the Explorer.

Seating and Space

The differences in the cabins are even starker. The Chevy Traverse can seat up to eight passengers, while the Explorer will only seat seven passengers. The Traverse is also capable of packing away more cargo than the Explorer with those seats up or down. When you have all seats in place, the Traverse has room for 24.4 cubic feet of cargo, while the Explorer will only fit 21 cubic feet. Fold the seats down and the Traverse will fit 116.3 cubic feet while the Explorer will only fit 80.7 cubic feet of space. You can see that the Traverse offers more space for passengers and cargo than the Explorer.
