Drivers who want a midsize truck that offers better fuel economy and a more accessible size than full-size trucks will probably consider both the new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and the 2015 Toyota Tacoma. These two trucks might be the perfect package for drivers that really don’t need the five ton hauling capability of some of the monsters that pass for passenger trucks today. In fact, these smaller trucks will probably better serve many drivers. But which one is the better deal? Find out below.

Powertrains and Performance

The Toyota Tacoma ships with a 2.7L four-cylinder that makes 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque standard. That four cylinder is rated by the EPA at up to19 mpg city/24 mpg highway with the automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The available 4.0L V6 is rated at 236 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, and rated by the EPA at 17 mpg city/21 mpg highway.

The Chevy Colorado comes standard with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that cranks out 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque and earns an EPA estimate of 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway, with automatic transmission and rear wheel drive. The available 3.5L V6 in the Colorado pumps out 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque and earns a 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway rating from the EPA.

It’s pretty obvious that the Colorado offers superior fuel economy and power output in either configuration. The Colorado is also able to tow up to 7,000 pounds—a class leading number that’s 500 pounds better than the max for the Tacoma.

Features and Options

How else do these vehicles compare? Well, if you want the latest technological features and the best warranty coverage, you’ll find the Colorado a better choice once again. The Chevy offers a standard OnStar telematics system with OnStar 4G LTE wireless connectivity and in-truck WiFi hotspot. The Tacoma lacks any of those high tech features.

Plus, Chevy covers the Colorado for 100,000 miles of powertrain and roadside assistance coverage, compared to 60,000 on the Toyota for powertrain warranty and only 25,000-miles/2-years of roadside assistance coverage.
